Trusted Traveler Programs Overview

by Michelle February 2, 2018
written by Michelle February 2, 2018

It’s a new year and a new you (but not for long). You’ve made your goals, intentions, or whatever for the year which includes working less and traveling more. You want to make the most of your time by enrolling in a trusted traveler program but don’t know where to start. Well, I’m here to help.

CLEAR

What it is: Partnership with airport security authorities that speeds you past ID check then guides you to TSA or TSA Precheck physical screening. Available at 30 airports and sports stadiums.

Why you should get it: You hate lines, even the short ones, and/or you’re always running late to the airport.

Application process: Start the process online then visit one of their locations, no appointment necessary. Complete the enrollment in 5-10 minutes.

Cost: $179 per year (ouch!)

Global Entry

What it is: Includes the TSA Precheck benefit (see below) as well as expedited U.S. customs screening for international air travelers when entering the U.S. Members use a kiosk to clear immigration, customs, and agricultural processing.

Why you should get it: If you travel domestically, and internationally at least once a year. You also hate lines and interacting with people. It’s worth it. Trust me.

Application process: Create a Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) account. Login to your account and complete the application which includes the non-refundable application fee. Schedule and attend your in-person interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center.

Cost: $100 for a five-year membership

NEXUS

What it is: Expedited processing into the U.S. or Canada following an international flight. Expedited pedestrian or vehicle entry into the U.S. or Canada. The program also includes TSA Precheck.

Why you should get it: If you travel between the US and Canada frequently.

Application process: Submit the initial application online then schedule and attend your in-person interview.

Cost: $50 for a five-year membership

SENTRI

What it is: Expedited entry into the U.S. for vehicles and pedestrians at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Why you should get it: If you drive (or walk) to the US from Mexico frequently. The program also includes access to TSA Precheck and use of Global Entry kiosks when entering the U.S., if your fingerprints and passport are on file with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Application process: Submit the initial application online then schedule and attend your in-person interview.

Cost: $122.50 for a five-year membership

TSA Precheck

What it is: Provides expedited security screening benefits for flights departing from U.S. airports. Members don’t have to remove their shoes, belt, light outerwear, laptop, or 3-1-1 liquids bag. There are 200 airports and 42 airlines that provide TSA Precheck.

Why you should get it: If you travel domestically, and don’t have a passport. Otherwise, get Global Entry. Or get a passport then get Global Entry.

Application process: Complete an online application and schedule an appointment at one of the 380+ enrollment centers. Attend an in-person appointment that includes a background check and fingerprinting.

Cost: $85 for a five-year membership

Happy travels!
